This somewhat pretentious name is chosen by the client, who is slightly eclectic and open-minded, eager to do things differently.

It all begins with a stunning site located in L’Étang-des-Caps in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, a bucolic area favored by visitors. This piece of land is characterized by its triangular shape, a view of the sea, and rolling topography. A red sandstone cliff, shaped by the sea, borders the entire area. ↓

The landscape is typical of the Îles’ postcards, with a few neighboring houses in traditional style. They are spaced out and staggered from each other. This area is beginning to see a few more contemporary architectural projects. ↓

In general, new houses blend well with the natural and built landscape of the archipelago, due in part to strict regulations governing “scenic corridors.” This description is crucial to the project, as it has significantly influenced the design. ↓

LA maison des Îles is designed for a client who wishes to escape urban centers upon retirement. Falling in love with the Îles, the client acquires this site with the intention of building a retirement home, but with the option to rent it out. Thus, the program includes a private garden level featuring a complete residence for the client. ↓

The main floor features a living area and a mezzanine available for rental for a few weeks each year. The interior is designed as an art gallery, with white walls and ceilings covered in white-painted slats. This environment accommodates a few decorative elements that create a contrasting universe (playful lighting, colorful sofa, Philippe Starck mirror), reflecting the client's taste. A bedroom and a sitting room are situated in the attic. ↓

The building is situated on the high part of the site, spanning a slight valley. The terrain's slope at this location allows part of the ground floor to be well-exposed and offers a view of the sea. The house's shape is strongly inspired by the coastline sculpted by the sea. The floor plan angles align with a ridge running along the site, which opens into a "V" shape towards the sea. This angular design also provides various viewpoints of the landscape, disrupting the horizon and breaking the monotony that can come from gazing at the vast expanse of water. ↓

True to most of the agency’s projects, the house is relatively discreet from the approach. The goal is to blend in and appear as though it has been part of the landscape forever. However, the project stands out for its boldness. It piques the curiosity of the locals but reveals its sculptural qualities as one walks around it. It is undoubtedly a contemporary touch in this traditionally conservative environment. ↓
