Demolition not being an option, the clients immediately saw the potential of this sixty-year-old architect-designed house and were willing to put in the effort to give it a second life.

A young professional couple with children, looking to expand their family, purchased a residence dating from the 1960s with the intention of updating its exterior and adapting its spaces to contemporary living styles. Located at the end of a quiet street lined with numerous mature trees, it was natural for this renovation to take advantage of the site’s introverted character by expanding the interior spaces while increasing the amount of natural light.

Its clean lines, featuring a pale, two-pitched volume set upon a masonry base, have been preserved. It is deceptive, as the entire envelope, except for the structure of the walls and floors, has been replaced. A natural white cedar cladding sliding beneath the upper volume marks the entrance. ↓

True to its time, the existing plan consisted of a sequence of closed rooms radiating around a staircase against the exterior wall. The partitions were removed to make way for a large open area, and the staircase was moved to the center, serving as a focal point upon arrival. This change also allowed for the insertion of a large window at the back of the house, bringing natural light into the heart of the residence. ↓

Structural steel plates allow the staircase to extend through the floors, seeming to defy gravity with a combination of lightness and strength. ↓

The generous floor area of the existing residence allowed for sacrificing part of it in favor of the living areas. A mezzanine workspace now overlooks the living room, enabling the installation of a large window overlooking the yard. ↓

The same treatment is applied to the walkway leading to the master bathroom. Throughout the day, the spaces are bathed in light filtered through the vegetation, thanks to the interruption of the floor and the lightweight guardrails. ↓
