Saint-Jean-Port-Joli is one of the major centers for wood sculpture in Quebec, making it an ideal place for establishing a production center and residency accommodation for artists. The building stands out for its distinctly contemporary appearance while remaining harmonious with the nearby historic homes and agricultural buildings.

The project emerged from an architecture competition, initiated after many years of preparation by the Centre Est-Nord-Est (ENE). Built on a narrow, elongated site where the former building of the center was located, the new structure is designed to resemble a large house. Formally, the building consists of a monolithic volume with a gabled roof, evoking the architecture of the Quebec countryside.

The spaces follow one another in sequence, revealing discoveries and distinct atmospheres, guiding the artist from communal areas to their solitary workspace. From Route 132, one accesses the entrance, the main meeting point that serves as a kitchen and communal dining area, as well as an exhibition space and a mezzanine library. ↓

A generous spiral staircase, crafted by a local artisan, adorns this double-height volume and directs the gaze toward the ceiling and its light apertures. ↓

Drawing inspiration from Christian Norberg-Schulz's theoretical writings, the project presents itself as a "collection of spaces and sub-spaces, within which movable elements allow for unrestricted expansion and experimentation." ↓

The wood and metal workshops, along with the shared assembly workshop, are located at the heart of the building, bridging the individual and communal spaces. ↓

For the first time since its inception, the Centre Est-Nord-Est combines both a production space and accommodation. Beyond the communal areas at the front of the building, the project includes several workspaces that lead to a mezzanine bedroom. This arrangement allows artists to adapt their work and living areas according to their individual needs. ↓

An outdoor courtyard extends the shared spaces and creates a visual connection with the surrounding nature. The materials used are simple and generally locally sourced. White cedar is prominently featured on the exterior cladding, while the roofs are covered with metal sheeting. The choice of interior and exterior materials reflects a sense of simplicity. The project's spirit is expressed through a series of straightforward and inventive solutions that offer versatility and flexibility. Like a blank canvas, the building provides a space conducive to experimentation and the creative growth of the artists who inhabit it during their stay. ↓
