Expansion Public2022

The strong growth in the number of students at École L’Eau-Vive led to the expansion project in order to meet the needs of the current school, but also the forecasts for the years to come. The extension is a separate entity located at the rear of the existing building to which it is connected by an overhead walkway.

The new facilities are spread over two levels and include a double gymnasium to host competitive sporting activities and community events, 8 classes for secondary school students, music and string ensemble rooms, a science and other related premises.

The layout of the site offers an outdoor play area and offers an enlarged parking area. The main body of the expansion bringing together the classrooms, service rooms and the hall is the first volume visible from the arrival. ↓

The gymnasium, more opaque, is located at the rear, slightly set back from the main volume. This new building slides to the northwest of the existing school and detaches itself from it in order to create a first outdoor space accessible to students and the community. ↓

In order to maintain continuity between the interior spaces, a raised and glazed walkway connects the two buildings. ↓

The exterior wood cladding on the main volume, which is also found inside in the hall, brings a warm touch to the whole. The rest of the building is covered with light-colored metal cladding to create a coherent and timeless architectural ensemble. ↓

The variation of the square windows brings a playful aspect to the facades and offers an interesting interior atmosphere, in addition to allowing the youngest to enjoy the view and the light. ↓

The window mosaic is completed by lighting of the same format creating a seemingly random pattern. ↓

Wide corridors make it possible to inhabit the space and encourage exchanges between classes. In addition, acoustic treatment and closed cubicles are added elements to enhance music lessons. ↓

The gymnasium benefits from windows in the upper part in order to provide a supply of natural light without glare and visual breakthroughs to the exterior environment. ↓

Wooden panels surround the gymnasium’s game boards to bring the warm look of the outdoors inside. ↓

The entrance to the expansion, distinguished by its overhang and its wooden curvature, opens onto a largely glazed hall which is intended to be welcoming and bright, in symbiosis with the rest of the new spaces. ↓
