Expansion + interior remodel Public2018

The expansion project for the CEGEP des Îles was prompted by the urgent need to address issues of obsolescence and unsanitary conditions in the classrooms and laboratories. The facilities had been temporarily installed in construction trailers in the 1970s. The project involves reconstructing the demolished spaces with the same dimensions.

Above all, the project is aimed at students from the Îles who choose to continue their post-secondary education on the archipelago.

The spaces to be demolished are located in two separate wings. The plan is to relocate the facilities closer together to improve internal operations. It includes 5 classrooms, a computer lab, and a science lab. Additionally, there are several staff offices and meeting rooms. ↓

The new volume is separated from the existing building by a corridor to facilitate its volumetric and architectural treatment ↓

The façades are animated by a play of angles around the windows. The wooden cladding delicately integrates with some of the façades of the school complex and the existing heritage buildings. The demolition of one of the wings leads to a partial interior reconfiguration as well as a requalification of certain façades. ↓

The new building thus creates a new showcase for the CEGEP, more visible from the street. Notably, its main staircase is prominently visible through the glass wall. ↓

A playful and colorful artwork by artist Gil Pître enlivens the space and energizes the façade in the evening when the stairwell is illuminated. ↓
